Renee

NAME: Renee

CAREER: Product Designer

FAMILY/SIGNIFICANT OTHER: My husband Jim, and children Corinne and Jonas

WHEN/HOW YOU STARTED SKATING: I skated occasionally for fun as a kid and teenager. My younger sister was a competitive figure skater (who also skated “precision”), and my brother and dad skated hockey. I loved watching them, but it all seemed like a lot of work so I stayed away! Fast forward about 30 years to 2008 when I began taking learn to skate classes at Chelsea Piers with my family  and became addicted overnight. My sister just laughs and thinks I’m completely insane.

WHEN/HOW YOU STARTED SKATING SYNCHRO:
I met some persuasive ambassadors in 2009 who encouraged me to try. They were right, synchro skating is a fun challenge, and being on this team is a great experience.

FAVORITE SKATER: John Curry, Scott Hamilton, Kurt Browning…it would be a long list.

SKATING GOALS: To improve my control, to test moves, and to try ice dancing.

Emma

NAME: Emma

OCCUPATION: Global HIV and Newborn Health Researcher for the Macha Research Trust

WHEN/HOW YOU STARTED SKATING:
I began skating with Figure Skating in Harlem, in the early 90s at Lasker Rink, where they exclusively played Whitney Houston songs from the “Bodyguard.”  (and I will always love yoooooooou!)

WHEN/HOW YOU STARTED SKATING SYNCHRO:
We did a lot of group numbers at FSH and joining a synchro team in college seemed like a natural way to keep skating with a team.  I kept synchro skating through grad school and I haven’t gone back to solo skating since!

FAVORITE SKATERS:
 Michelle Kwan, Debi Thomas

FAVORITE SKATING MEMORY: Performing in a show at Chelsea Piers with half of my dress on backwards :)

CURRENT SKATING GOALS: Learn more ice dances to improve edges and footwork.

FAVORITE HELEN BAKED GOOD: Carrot chocolate brownies.  which are amazing!  and she won’t give me the recipe!

Nancy

Nancy Quaife

NAME: Nancy

OCCUPATION:
Attorney who for many years worked at a major NYC bank, specializing in consumer banking and community development law.

WHEN/HOW YOU STARTED SKATING: I grew up in Detroit, and my dad would make an ice rink in our backyard in winter (before the days of global warming).  We lived near the Detroit Skating Club, and my family joined that.  About two years later, we moved to the suburbs, and I stopped skating until after college.

WHEN/HOW YOU STARTED SKATING SYNCHRO:
I joined Gotham City Synchro in 2008.

FAVORITE SKATING MEMORY:
Two favorites: Michelle Kwan’s short program to Rachmaninoff at Nationals in 1998 and Torvill and Dean’s Mack and Mabel free dance at World’s in 1982.

FAVORITE SKATER: Probably Michelle Kwan: she will long be remembered as a role model for figure skating.

CURRENT SKATING GOALS: To pass Adult Gold Moves. Those brackets are a killer!
